The British delegation had hoped to begin talks on a trade deal in parallel with discussing the divorce terms. They were warned this would not be possible, but somehow were deluded enough to think that the EU would relent. Already the French and German leaders have said no. Divorce talks first, then talks on a trade deal. This looks to be the position the Council of Ministers (Donald Tusk) will take too. Not very good for Britain as Brexit reality comes home.
